Recently, the remake of Resident Evil was released in Japan
and the USA for the GameCube. While it is no secret that Resident
Evil (knows as Biohazard in Japan) has a huge following, sales
of the game in Japan were just north of dismal. While sales
are looking a little better in the USA, this probably won't
be enough to stay Capcom's hand.
What is this that I'm referring to? It's Capcom's contingency
plan. You see, when the GameCube failed to sell very well
in Japan, Capcom expressed misgivings about its exclusivity
deal with the Resident Evil series. They essentially said
that if the game didn't generate favorable sales stats, they
would consider canceling the exclusive deal to take Resident
Evil to the PS2 or Xbox.
So, here we are... Resident Evil is selling like crap in
Japan and not that much better in the USA. What's Capcom to
do? Perhaps they'll make some kind of announcement at E3,
but I highly doubt that. If they do anything at all, they'll
wait a little longer before making the announcement I'm sure.
Or, Nintendo may just wave some money at them and get them
to stay on despite low sales. Only time will tell.
I try very hard to not be biased for or against any console
or company, but I can't help but find this amusing. Nintendo
makes a cute, targeting for kids console... puts a mature
game on it... and the game doesn't sell. Gosh, I wonder why...
