According to Nekkie Computer in Japan, Square has indeed signed on to make Final Fantasy XI, and possibly other titles, for the Xbox. Square refuses to confirm or deny this, and the manager of Microsoft's advanced technology group for the Xbox, Naoto Yoshioka, had this to say:

"We currently can't confirm or deny that information. Acquiring Final Fantasy, one of the most popular video game series, is indeed one of our primary goals, We will indeed be happy if Square announces its development for the Xbox."

Here's the Prawth.net translation for you:

"Yes, we want this to happen, we've been trying very hard to make it happen, it will happen, but until the press release you'll have to cool your heels while we act smug about it."

Prawth.net translations are not infallible, but the next couple of weeks should tell one way or the other if this story is indeed true or if Nekkie Computer is playing a horrible, horrible joke.
